Alpha-Stim® is an FDA approved, clinically proven personal CES (Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation) device used in the treatment of Depression and Anxiety. The small hand held unit is roughly the size of a cellular phone and easily travels almost anywhere with the user. It works off of common 9 volt batteries. A thin, lightweight cord attaches to the unit and splits into two cords that run to each ear (much like those of an MP3 or other personal music players). At the ends are small hinged electrodes that clip onto the user’s ear lobes. No part of the device goes inside the ear and no outside chemical substances are introduced into the body. There are no dangerous side effects or concerns about correct dosage or allergies as there may be with medications. The device has a range of low-level intensity settings and each client is instructed to use the Alpha-Stim® at a level of current that feels comfortable to him/her. There is no added benefit to increasing the settings beyond the personal comfort level.

Based on ongoing studies and brain scans, Alpha-Stim® appears to target and activate specific nerve cell groups of the Central Nervous System that sit atop the spinal cord at the brain stem. Locate3d here are production centers for the chemicals serotonin and acetylcholine. These specialized chemicals have the ability to affect other nerve cells, both near and far, as they travel via neuronal pathways as chemical messages. Alpha-Stims® application of low-intensity (equal to or less than 2mA) alternating (AC) current stimulation apparently works to change the pattern of brainwaves, increasing activity in certain systems, and decreasing it in others. The result is a type of neuronal activity call alpha-rhythms. This activity can be measured on EEG scans. Alpha rhythms are associated with feelings of relaxation and calmness. By inducing this state, Alpha-Stim® works to stabilize mood and reduce stress and anxiety. The perception of different types of pain is also reduced, and mental focus is improved. These results can be noted after the first treatment in the cases of anxiety, and in three to 4 weeks of regular use, for depression and insomnia. Treatments will typically last between 20-60 minutes, depending on the intensity setting.
