Communication
A therapist is trained to be able to help keep your relationships open, transparent, and respectful. Successful relationships depend on mutual commitment, shared values, and good communication. However, even the best relationships can benefit from periodic tune-ups. At some point in every kind relationship, people encounter issues that require the ability to communicate effectively. Without effective communication and conflict resolution strategies, issues may be temporarily “smoothed over,” but nothing ever gets resolved. Like clockwork, these issues resurface repeatedly but are never agreed on to the satisfaction of one or both parties.
A key to effective communication is the ability to talk about issues as well as listen to the other person’s perceptions about those problems as they arise. When we are hurt or upset, it can be extremely difficult to listen to what the other one is saying. When we feel the need to be right, we lose sight of the others feelings and communication breaks down.
